ARTWORK AUTHENTICATION & VALUATION REPORT
Publisher: Thomas McLean (Operating out of 26 Haymarket, London). McLean was a prominent 19th-century print seller who competed directly with Ackermann.Publication Date: June 4th (Circa 1837–1838).Medium: Antique hand-colored aquatint print / engraving.2. Provenance & Framing HistoryProduction (Late 1830s): The print was pulled from an etched copper or steel plate, hand-colored with watercolor washes, and sold at Thomas McLean’s Haymarket shop.Reframing (Mid-20th Century, 1942–1980s):
The partial backing label belongs to Arthur Ackermann & Son, Ltd. (Dealers in Works of Art, 3, Old Bond Street, London, W.1.). Following the 1942 Blitz bombing of their previous building on New Bond Street, Ackermann moved to 3 Old Bond Street. This historic gallery used this exact address format through the late 1980s, confirming the print was professionally vetted and framed or sold through their prestigious Mayfair showroom during the mid-20th century.
Because it bears the Thomas McLean publication line rather than a modern gallery restrike line, it is highly likely a period original. Prints with bright, crisp, unfaded original watercolors sit at the higher end of the valuation scale.
The Ackermann Frame: Having an authentic Arthur Ackermann label on the backing adds a premium of roughly £30–£50 in prestige value because it proves a high-end dealer handled the piece. .
There is minimal "foxing" (small brown spots), paper darkening caused by old acidic wood backings, or whether the original paper margins were cropped small to fit the frame.
